Last time I talked about a WordPress affiliate plugin called ViralPlugin. This time, I’m going to talk about a WordPress SEO plugin called SEOPressor. I had the chance to give this plugin a try before it was officially launched. As soon as I tried it, I knew it was going to be a hit! Here is why…

WordPress SEO Plugin

SEOPressor is a WordPress SEO plugin, in other words: a plugin for on-page SEO. As you may already know, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is broken down into two categories: (1) on-page SEO and (2) off-page SEO. On-page SEO is everything you optimize on your site: page titles, meta tags, headings, keyword density and a lot of other factors. Off-page SEO is everything you do off your site: link building, social bookmarking, etc. SEOPressor is only about on-page SEO, which means it will help you optimize the posts and pages of your WordPress site or blog.

Setting up this WordPress SEO plugin is very easy. It’s like any other plugin. All you need to do is to upload it to your ‘Plugins’ folder via FTP or WordPress and activate it. Once it’s activated, you can start using it right away. What you first need to do is to go to the post or page you want to optimize. You will see a new field entitled ‘SEOPressor Keyword’ where you must enter a keyword. Once this is done, go to the plugin interface and check the on-page SEO score. SEOPressor lists all the scores of the posts and pages where you entered a keyword.

If the score for a given post or page is over 90%, good job. If it’s under 90%… then there’s some work to do! SEOPressor not only gives you scores so you know how well your posts and pages are optimized, but it also gives you plenty of suggestions to improve them, and make them more search engine-friendly. I’m not an SEO guru but I know quite a lot about this field, and I can say that the suggestions are very relevant and useful!

Even better, SEOPressor automatically improves the on-page factors of your posts and pages! If you go to the plugin settings you will see that you can choose to automatically improve these aspects. It will automatically add the keyword to your page title, bold the keyword in the body content and all sorts of things that will improve the search engine-friendliness of your posts and pages. These settings are turned on after you install the plugin but you can turn them off easily if you want to do the modifications yourself.

Check this out, the results for a niche site I created a few weeks ago:

This site is just a few weeks old and already ranks in the Top 3 of Google for its keyword! I let you check yourself… I really love that plugin, because once you have a high score, you can focus on off-page SEO. You don’t have to worry about on-page SEO anymore… Daniel Tan, the creator of this WordPress SEO plugin, regularly updates the plugin so you’re sure it’s always up-to-date with the latest on-page SEO trends. I really recommend it to anyone who has a WordPress site or blog and wants to improve its search engine rankings. It’s another MUST-HAVE! Get SEOPressor NOW!

Inbounds links are useful for two main reasons: they can generate additional traffic to your website and, most importantly, influence search engines in the ranking of your pages. There are plenty of ways to get inbound links. One of them is becoming increasingly popular: user generated content websites and micro blogging platforms.

HubPages is certainly the most popular user generated content website. It has been designed around sharing advertising revenue for high quality, user generated content. Some of the pages – all built by web users – are very popular and generate a significant amount of traffic. Just so you know, some people are making heaps of money with these kinds of websites. I’m not explaining you how to make money with them though, but how to get more quality inbound to your website. Anyway, HubPages is the first website you want to look at.

Squidoo was founded about a year before HubPages and is also very popular. It doesn’t generate as much traffic as HubPages but is still a big player. Squidoo was designed to help web users easily find useful overview pages – called lenses – written by real people. With Squidoo, you have the option to give your earnings to charity, which is a good thing if you’re not really interested in monetizing your page.

Tumblr is a micro blogging platform that allows users to post text, images, videos and other types of content to their micro blog. Tumblr is popular for its customizability and ease of use. This is not the ultimate blogging platform, but if you’re not too familiar with blogging, or just want a simple but effective blog, then you should consider Tumblr. Signing up on Tumblr only takes a few seconds, and everything has been done to make you publish your content in the most simple way possible.

Posterous is another micro blogging platform but is slightly different from Tumblr. With Posterous, you can publish blog posts by simply emailing your content to a dedicated email address. If you’re confused about blogging, well this might be the best option. I just cannot think of a more simple way to publish content. You email your content and… that’s it. Your blog has been created. You don’t even need to log into the system to publish your content. You can do so though, if you really want to, to edit your existing blog posts for example… It is not as big as Tumblr but I really like the concept. Give it a try, it is definitely worth it.

ViralHosts is also a great way to get more quality inbound links to your site. This all-in-one cPanel hosting, list builder and mailer system allows you to host and build a site in no time. With ViralHosts, you can link to your main site, squeeze pages or any other pages you want. You know how much value search engines give to inbound links… ViralHosts is your chance to get quality ones! To be honest with you, I just can’t stop finding new benefits to using ViralHosts, so make sure you join free today and see how this system can help you build a strong online presence!

Otherwise, you may want to look at alternatives like Google’s Knol, SpongeFish or LaunchTags. Browse around and choose the ones you like. If you’re really after inbound links, then create a page on each of these websites. Keep in mind that not all will allow you to post links without a rel=nofollow attribute (which basically remove the value of the link for search engines), or only allow you to do so once your page is considered as a high quality page. Focus on quality and don’t insert too many links, one or two (to different landing pages) are usually enough. There is no use linking twice to the same address on the same page.

Before starting optimizing your website for search engines, it is essential to find out which keywords to use. This is what search engine optimizers call keyword research. It is not only about popularity but also about other factors such as competitiveness, location, etc. There are several different ways to find keywords for your website. I will focus on three simple but effective ways: people, keyword suggestion tools and competitors.

1. People

A mistake that too many website owners do is that they do not try imagine themselves as potential customers. Try to forget everything you know about your product or service and ask yourself how you would call it. What words do your customers use to call your product or service? What words do they type in search engines to search for businesses like yours? You may not use the same vocabulary than yours customers. You also may simply want to ask around you: your friends, colleagues… and of course your customers themselves. Make a list of keywords and check their popularity and competitiveness with a keyword suggestion tool.

2. Keyword suggestion tools

There are plenty of keyword suggestion tools available on the web. Some are free, some are not. I tend to use Google’s keyword suggestion tool: Google AdWords: Keyword Tool. It has originally been designed to help people finding keywords for their Google AdWords campaigns but it works fine for search engine optimization purposes. I’m pretty sure Microsoft and Yahoo! have their own. Otherwise, you may be interested in paid keyword suggestion tools such as Wordtracker and Keyword Discovery or even a keyword research software like Keyword Elite. This kind of program can help you achieve great results with only little effort. I believe keyword suggestion tools are an essential step in keyword research. They will help you verify how popular and competitive keywords are.

3. Competitors

Finally, I believe it is definitely worth taking a look at the keywords your competitors use. Visit their website and see in the page source (View > Source with Internet Explorer and View > Page Source with Firefox) which keywords are used in the page title, keywords tag, description tag, etc. The page title also shows up in the bar at the very top of your web browser. However, it is not because your competitor uses a keyword that it is necessarily the best choice for your website.

There are a few other keyword research techniques – trend monitoring tools can be very useful in some cases – but these three should help you start building a comprehensive list of keywords to use when optimizing your website.

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about optimizing page titles. Another easy technique that can help your website get better rankings in search engines is to add alt attributes to images. Here is what we can find on the topic in Google’s Webmaster Guidelines: “Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn’t recognize text contained in images. If you must use images for textual content, consider using the alt attribute to include a few words of descriptive text”. Fair enough, that’s pretty straight forward.

Alt attributes will help search engines know what the images are about, but also web users in the case they don’t display (the alt attributes will show up instead of the images). I don’t think you should just add as many keywords as possible, but rather give the image a relevant description. If you use a content management system, it should be fairly easy. You may simply have to go the image’s properties. There’s probably a blank field dedicated to the alt attribute. If you don’t use a content management system, it may be a little more difficult as you have to use an HTML editor and add alt="..." within the image tag. You may also want to add title attributes (title="..."), which are used by most web browsers as tooltips. Tooltips show up when you hover an image with your mouse pointer. Some web browsers, including Internet Explorer 6 and 7, use alt attributes (and not title attributes) as tooltips.

This will look like a tip for beginners, and it is the case, but I still see a lot of websites with no alt attributes at all… and I think that’s a shame, because it is useful to both search engines and web users. I wouldn’t say all images should have alt attributes but most of them, especially your logo, product images, etc.

When people ask me how they should start optimizing their website for search engines, I tend to respond that they should begin with the optimization of their home page title. I still see a lot of websites with a home page named “Home”. What a waste… I’ve managed to help quite a few small businesses rank better in search engines by only changing their home page title. These websites have no or few competitors, but their owners wouldn’t take advantage of the situation.

Keywords first

Anyway, back to the point of this post. Most websites have a home page title with the website name first, then the keywords: “Marketing Meerkat – Internet Marketing Blog”. I believe in putting the keywords first, then the website name: “Internet Marketing Blog – Marketing Meerkat”. Maybe you don’t even need to put the website name. Unless branding is a key element of your strategy, you should definitely think about it. What do web users want to know first? Who you are? Or what you do?

Don’t forget that when doing a search on Google, the keywords you’ve typed in are highlighted in bold on results pages. Showing up on results pages is good, but getting some attention is better!

I discovered a fantastic online tool the other day at work. It’s called Website Grader and basically grades your website by measuring its web traffic, search engine-friendliness, social popularity, and several other technical factors.

You simply have to enter your website address and wait for the result to come up. It doesn’t take more than a few seconds. The report gives you several indicators on how your website is performing, as well as some general advices on how to make it more search engine-friendly. It’s pretty useful if you’re not really familiar with search engine optimization as it actually tells you what’s wrong, why it’s wrong, and how to make up for all this wrongness. Oh, and I forgot to tell you… it’s entirely free!

I’ve used a few similar tools in the past, but I find this one pretty good. It actually reminded to set up a permanent redirect for one of the websites I’m working on. This tool is run by American internet marketing company HubSpot. They also provide tools to grade your Facebook page, Twitter page…
