Last weekend I finally received an invitation from Google to join the preview version of Google Wave, which is described as a new personal communication and collaboration tool. It’s a web-based service developed in Australia and designed to merge emails, instant messages, social networks and wikis. There was a lot of hype over Google Wave these last few months and I’m glad I can try this new, very promising communication tool. Here are my first impressions…

First, anyone using Google Wave at this time should understand that this is only a preview version. Don’t be surprised if you find bugs. You are actually encouraged to report them to Google. There’s nothing really impressive the first time you connect but you get a good idea of what Google is trying to create: a comprehensive, real-time communication platform. A very noble goal, isn’t it?

Google Wave is very intuitive and rather well structured. With this new tool, we’re not talking about emails and instant messages anymore but about waves. These waves are created by users and can be followed by those who are invited to become collaborators. We’re not talking about recipients anymore but truly about collaborators. This is pretty straight forward and all the functions Google Wave has makes it a very promising online communication tool. You can drag things around, embed waves in blogs and websites, play back any part of the waves you follow… It’s also customizable and most of the source code is planned to be released as open source, which is very interesting as developers around the world will be able to create applications and extensions.

Luckily, I got a few invitations to send out and will thus be able to use Google Wave more comprehensively the next few days after I can get friends and colleagues to join me. If you haven’t received an invitation yet, ask around you. It seems that quite a few people received an invitation from Google these last few days (and thus the possibility to send out a few invitations). Otherwise, you may simply request an invitation to Google Wave.

Has anyone tried Google Wave yet? Feel free to comment this blog post. I’m eager to hear from already existing users! With the recent release of an experimental version of Google Social Search, the American giant seems to be on the way to provide us, once again, with great tools that are likely to change the way we use the internet.
